Provide Basic Emergency Life Support Course

This short course deals with the provision of emergency life support in recognising and responding to an emergency using basic life support measures. The first aider provides an initial response to a situation where first aid may be required but is not expected to deal with complex casualties or incidents. In this unit it is assumed the first aider is working under supervision and/or according to established workplace or community first aid procedures and policies.

Duration:

The Course in Apply First Aid is generally conducted over a 7 hour period. However this may vary depending on group size, previous experience and workplace requirements.

Entry requirements:

Nil, however it is recommended that participants have literacy and numeracy competencies equivalent to National Reporting System (NRS) Level 2 which require:

comprehending and/or producing structurally simple and cohesive texts which are typically short and explicit
identifying, using, checking on and communicating straightforward mathematical procedures and representation in familiar and predictable contexts with access to structured support required.

Element of Competency/Performance Criteria:


Element of competency Performance criteria
Elements define the essential outcomes of a unit of competency. The Performance Criteria specify the level of performance required to demonstrate achievement of the Element. Terms in italics are elaborated in the Range Statement.
1. Respond in an emergency situation 1.1 Recognise emergency situation and identify hazards to health and safety of self and others
1.2 Minimise immediate risk to health and safety of self, casualty and others by isolating any hazard(s)
1.3 Assess casualty and identify injuries, illnesses and conditions
1.4 Assess the need for assistance
2. Apply identified first aid procedures 2.1 Reassure casualty in a caring and calm manner and make comfortable using available resources
2.2 Determine and explain the nature of casualty's injury/condition and relevant first aid procedures to provide comfort
2.3 Seek consent from casualty or significant other prior to applying first aid management
2.4 Respond to the casualty in a culturally aware, sensitive and respectful manner
2.5 Use identified first aid procedures as required in accordance with established first aid principles, policies and procedures, ARC Guidelines and/or state/territory regulations, legislation and policies and industry requirements
2.6 Use safe manual handling techniques as required
3. Communicate details of the incident 3.1 Request ambulance support and/or appropriate medical assistance according to relevant circumstances and using available means of communication
3.2 Accurately convey assessment of casualty's condition and first aid procedures undertaken to emergency services/relieving personnel
3.3 Calmly provide information to reassure casualty, adopting a communication style to match the casualty's level of consciousness
3.4 Provide reports, where applicable, in a timely manner, presenting all relevant facts according to established procedures
3.5 Maintain confidentiality of records and information in line with privacy principles and statutory and/or organisation policies
4. Evaluate own performance 4.1 Seek feedback from appropriate clinical expert
4.2 Recognise the possible psychological impacts on rescuers of involvement in critical incidents
4.3 Participate in debriefing/evaluation as appropriate to improve future response and address individual needs

Venues:

This program can be conducted at your location of business or at a venue that is suitable and convenient to the participants. First Intervention is able to deliver this course at a time to suit your needs.

Class Size: Normally a minimum of 8 participants is required and a maximum of 20 participants is allowed.
Assessment:

All assessments conducted by First Intervention will be consistent with the requirements of Standard 8.1 of the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF) Standards for Registered Training Organisations.

All assessment tools and methods will be valid, reliable, fair and flexible.

Participants will be informed of the context and purpose of the assessment and the assessment process.

Feedback will be provided to participants about the outcomes of the assessment process and guidance given on future options.

Assessment strategies are designed to:
cover a range of skills and knowledge required to demonstrate achievement of the course aim
collect evidence on a number of occasions and in a variety of contexts and situations
be appropriate to the knowledge, skills, methods of delivery and needs/characteristics of the learners
assist assessors to interpret evidence consistently
recognise prior learning
be equitable to all groups of learners.

Where possible, an integrated approach to assessment is recommended.

Certificates: On successful completion of this course participants are awarded the Statement of Attainment HLTFA201A Course in Provide Basic Emergency Life Support.

This course incorporates the content of unit HLTCPR201A Perform CPR which is valid for a period of 12 months from the date of issue.  All other competencies under HLTFA201A are valid for a period of 36 months.

Next Step: Participants who have successfully completed this course are encouraged to either undertake the Course in Apply First Aid or the Apply Advanced First Aid.
